Fauna on the Cays

Fauna or animal life on the cays consists of species that have adaped to life on small islands with limited fresh water. Many of these animals, such as the Huita, are very timid and walkers must maintain a sharp lookout to spot them along the trails.

     Hutia        More Information

  • Only native land mammal in the Bahamas.
  • Once thought to be extinct, but small colony found in the Plana Cays.
  • Population expanded through relocations to the Park.
  • Now a thriving species in two park locations.

 


  Exuma Island Iguana       More Information
  • (Cyclura cychlura figginsi)
  • Critically endangered species.
  • Primarily herbivorous.
  • Grow to approximately 3 feet long with an estimated life span of 25 years.

 


     Curly Tail Lizard      More Information
  • (Leiocephalus carinatus armouri)
  • Fairly common throughout the Bahamas.
  • Populations tend to do well if not bothered by pets
  • Named for the distinctive curl in the tail.

 


   Mini Boa Contstrictor     More Information
  • (Epicrates chrysogaster)
  • One of two non-poisonous snakes in the Bahamas.
  • Generally lives in trees or forested areas.
  • Captures lizards and small birds for food by suffocating them.
  • Have been seen at Warderick Wells Cay and Hawksbill Cay.

 


 Land Crab    More Information
  • (Cardisoma guanhumi)
  • Very common on Andros Island, but not unusual in the Park.
  • Often found in or around the sinkholes around the island.
  • True omnivores..
